La Jetée (Chris Marker, 1962)

28 Apr

The first and most obvious question to pose (pun partly intended) to this film is why tell it in still photographs? Does this call into question whether La Jetée is really a motion picture? Take note that what we normally think of as motion pictures are really film stills projected at a rate of 24 frames per second. Perhaps motion pictures are really “apparent motion pictures.”

For your reading benefit, here’s a list of merely three of the many essays that have been written about this much-discussed film:

  1. “On La Jetée by Jean-Louis Schefer
  2. “Retrospecto: La Jetée by Simon Sellars
  3. La Jetée: Unchained Melody” by Jonathan Romney
